Dungeon Crawler Carl Books in Order: The Complete Reading Guide (2026)

Dungeon Crawler Carl Books in Order: The Complete Reading Guide

Reading Dungeon Crawler Carl in order is refreshingly simple — it is a straight linear series with no prequels, no mandatory spin-offs, and no timeline jumps. But there are real decisions to make about editions, a bonus novella hiding inside the new print runs, side content that some fans miss, and an audiobook program with its own release rhythm. This guide covers all of it, book by book.

Tip

The one-paragraph answer: start with Dungeon Crawler Carl (book one), read straight through to A Parade of Horribles (book eight) in publication order, and do not worry about anything else until you are hooked. Everything below is optimization, not requirement.

Publication order and chronological order are identical. Matt Dinniman wrote the series as one continuous descent, and unlike many long-running fantasy series there are no flashback prequels that need to be slotted in later.

Note

Wondering how much story is left? Dinniman has said the series will conclude with a ninth volume — so large it will be split into two parts. We track everything known so far in our book 9 release date guide.

Book-by-Book Quick Summaries (Spoiler-Free)

Book 1 — Dungeon Crawler Carl. Earth collapses and Carl, along with his ex-girlfriend’s Persian cat Princess Donut, descends into the alien game show running beneath the surface. They meet Mordecai, their dungeon mentor, learn the survival rules, and accidentally become two of the most popular crawlers in the galaxy.

Book 2 — Carl’s Doomsday Scenario. Floor three brings race and class selection: Carl becomes a Compensated Anarchist, Donut picks Former Child Actor. The open-world floor introduces Hekla and Katia, faction politics, and Carl’s first real enemies among the dungeon’s elite.

Book 3 — The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook. The train floor. A radical departure in structure that fans either love or argue about — and home of the cookbook that gives the book its name.

Book 4 — The Gate of the Feral Gods. God-tier stakes arrive. The scope of the dungeon’s politics expands dramatically, and the series’ emotional register deepens.

Book 5 — The Butcher’s Masquerade. Widely considered the action high-water mark of the series and the book that converts skeptics into superfans.

Book 6 — The Eye of the Bedlam Bride. A haunted-carnival floor, guest narrator Patrick Warburton in the audio edition voicing Carl’s father, and major revelations about the show behind the show.

Book 7 — This Inevitable Ruin. The Dragoncon Award winner for Best Science Fiction Novel of 2025 and the longest entry at this point in the run.

Book 8 — A Parade of Horribles. Released May 12, 2026 — simultaneously the biggest launch in the series’ history and the direct setup for the finale arc.

Editions: Self-Published vs Ace Books

This trips up more readers than any other question, so here is the clean version:

Warning

If you buy used paperbacks from before August 2024, you are getting the original self-pub editions without the Pineapple Cabaret bonus chapters. For collectors, the Ace hardcovers are the definitive shelf copies; for readers on a budget, the Kindle editions are unchanged and cheapest.

Should You Listen Instead? The Audiobook Order

The audio order matches the reading order exactly, and for many fans it is simply the better way in: Jeff Hays narrates every book through Soundbooth Theater, performing around 200 distinct characters across the series so far. Audio sales have overtaken print and ebook combined, and book seven’s audio edition landed on Audible’s best-of-the-year list. Our full audiobook guide compares the standard editions with the full-cast Audio Immersion Tunnel productions.

There is also a standalone listening option: each book works as an audiobook from minute one, with no companion materials required.

The Cheapest Ways to Start

  1. Kindle Unlimited — the ebooks are in KU, so the entire back catalog is effectively free with a subscription. This is the single fastest way to binge books one through eight.
  2. Kindle editions à la carte — around $5 per book, always available since Dinniman controls digital publishing directly.
  3. Library apps — Libby and Hoopla carry both print and audio editions in many regions.
  4. Ace paperbacks — the retail editions if you want the Pineapple Cabaret bonus material and consistent shelf spines.

What About Side Stories and Spin-offs?

The current count of “required” side material is zero — but two things exist:

If you want more fiction after book eight, your realistic options are a re-read or our list of books like Dungeon Crawler Carl while you wait for book nine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just skip to the TV show instead?

You could, but you would be doing it backwards: the Peacock series is still in production with no release date announced yet, while all eight books are out right now. Read first, then enjoy arguing about the adaptation online like everyone else.

How long does the whole series take to read?

Roughly speaking, plan for well over a hundred hours of audio or several thousand pages of text across eight books — the entries have grown substantially longer as the series progresses, from around 440 pages for book one to considerably more for recent volumes.

Is anything missing from the ebook versions?

No. Digital editions contain the complete novels; only the print-exclusive Pineapple Cabaret novella passages differ between editions.

Where do I officially buy the books?

The publisher’s official series page lists all retail options, and Matt Dinniman’s site links every format including his self-published ebooks. The series overview is also maintained on Wikipedia.
